HISTORY

The shooting park concept was first discussed in the late 80’s.  In 1991 Dick Neider, Bemidji Trap and Skeet Club, Scott Gesell, MN Deer Hunters Assn.  Vic Koosmann, MN DNR Enforcement and Bob Naylor, Bemidji Trap and Skeet Club formally met and were soon joined by Clarence Erickson, John Ahrens, Mark Cook, Kevin Peterson and Mike Porter to found the Headwaters Shooting Sports Association which evolved into Headwaters Shooting Sports Foundation.  This group discussed a long-term strategy to secure property and funding for the shooting sports park.
The idea of a shooting park was supported by BASA, BTSC, Beltrami Co., Belt. Co. Sheriff’s Dept., Bemidji Police, Eckles Township, Paul Bunyan District Voyageurs Area Council Boy Scouts of America, Northern Minn Hunter Education and FAS Instructors Assoc., National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Scholastic Clay Target Program, and Youth Shooting Sports Alliance. In 2016 the Neilson Foundation awarded the project a $600,000. grant over a 5-year period along with the MN DNR Shooting Range Grant Program.
With hard work and tenacity, the project was set in motion and here we are over 25 years later, a dream becomes reality!

New Park Features!

Congratulations to the volunteers who completed work on the 200-yard range and the shelters at the ATV / OHV trail head and the trap and skeet range.  Also completed is the 5 - Stand and sporting clays area. Well Done!
